General Objective

The International Course on Clinical Mycology, traditionally offered by the Westerdijk CBS/The Netherlands Institute and currently by the Atlas of Clinical Fungi Foundation, held its 4th edition in Brazil. The event took place from December 1st to 8th, 2025, at the ILMD – Fiocruz Amazonia in Manaus, under the local coordination of Dr. Ani B. J. Matsuura and Dr. Vania A. Vicente.

The course provides biological and taxonomic concepts of fungi of clinical interest in the medical and veterinary areas. The program included theoretical and practical modules focused on advanced knowledge of pathogenicity and virulence mechanisms, diagnostic methods, and therapeutic aspects in human and animal hosts.

Executed at ILMD – Fiocruz Amazonia, the event was supported by the INCT – Conservation and Exploitation of Biological Resources in Networked Collections (INCT-CERBC), coordinated by Professor Dr. Vania Aparecida Vicente, in partnership with the graduate Program in Living Conditions and Health Situations in the Amazon (PPGVIDA) and the Amazon Microbial Diversity Laboratory (LDMAIS/Fiocruz).

The hybrid model course reached a diverse audience. The theoretical-online module was transmitted in real-time to remote locations across the North Brazil region and Amazon countries like Venezuela and Colombia. The face-to-face modules offered 100 vacancies for theoretical classes and 60 for practical activities. In total, 89 registrants participated, with 83% being professionals working in health, biosciences, and surveillance, and 17% being master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral students.

Taught by Prof. Sybren de Hoog in collaboration with reference names in Mycology worldwide, such as Jacques Meis and Flavio Queiroz-Telles Filho, the course aimed at training professionals to meet the demands of the health sector, providing access to key molecular tools for fungal identification and diagnosis applied to Biotechnology and public health.
